How I Have Grown Up With A Tree!

by Green Leap Delhi on August 5, 2011

The great French Marshall Lyautey once asked his gardener to plant a tree. The gardener objected that the tree was slow-growing and would not reach maturity for 100 years. The Marshall replied, ‘In that case, there is no time to lose; plant it this afternoon!
- John F. Kennedy

A tree becomes our asset when it grows with us. My most vivid memory of my grandparents’ house is the lush mango tree that graced their back yard. There was nothing particularly special about that tree to anybody who visited the backyard, but to me it was a green palace of sorts. The warm, juicy, lush that cluttered the tree, weighed down the arching branches, producing a fountain of leaves that spilled to the ground, was my favourite. Pushing aside the robust arms of the tree revealed a secret nook between the branches and it was in that nook that I would sit for hours, reading, napping and feasting on the never-ending aam-sutra.

The khatti kairi or raw mini-mangoes that I used to pluck and eat were more sour than anything I had ever tasted. Their tartness made my mouth as dry as a desert. Yet I continued to savour each bite as the little mango’s sourness set my tongue and palate on fire. As I would lie there, under my tent of graceful leaves, I would smell the sweet aroma all around me. It smelt like a summer day, fresh and warm. I used to stay there for hours and hours relishing the beauty of the colorful world around me. My naps were often cut short by the shrill and piercing chirps of greedy birds and till date I cherish those moments like a beautiful dream which I had once.

Spending my time tucked away in my nature-made heaven was the time that I enjoyed and I will never forget. The sights, sounds, scents, flavors, and sensations that I carry with me will always remind me of my refuge that I had under that mango tree. Today I love to take my grandchildren along with me to show them the serene beauty of nature, to show them the trees with whom I have grown up and acquaint them with the feeling of being in love with nature. I want them to plant trees and to grow with them. But alas! They are in love with their own world- a world of machinery, technology and a schizoid world which has lost its beauty.

by Green Leap Delhi on August 1, 2011

There is always Music amongst the trees in the Garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it. Economic Benefits Of Trees

by Green Leap Delhi on July 28, 2011

Economic Benefits Of Trees

Man’s best friend on earth is the Tree. When we use the tree respectfully and economically, we have one of the greatest resources on the earth. – Frank Lloyd Wright

There are multitude reasons to plant a tree. Many may be obvious, but some are not so obvious. Trees bring with them benefits and these benefits are so overwhelming that the loss of them would ruin our lives. One of the best parts of growing trees is that they provide us economic benefits too. The economic benefits are greatest when unproductive community land (generally low quality) is used for private tree planting. Planting a tree is a great deed in itself as it’s a kind of blessing to the nature.

Trees properly placed around buildings reduce air conditioning and heating costs. As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), thereby reducing the concentration of this gas in the atmosphere.Having a tree right outside a house can save 10 to 15 % of your electricity bills because a mature tree canopy reduces air temperatures by about 5°Cinfluencing the internal temperatures of nearby buildings.

Trees boost the market value of a community by making it inhabitable. Consumers are drawn to places that look inviting, pleasant, and orderly. They enjoy having trees near shopping centers and adore lingering and shopping longer along tree-lined streets. Business industries want to locate in communities that have a positive image, and trees lend to that image. As a result, trees help to stimulate economic development, attracting new businesses and tourism.

Trees supply rural households with wood products for their own consumption, as well as for sale. Properly managed forests in an area provide a sustained supply of lumber, plywood & countless other wood products.

There are limitless ways in which a tree influences our lives and the economic benefits mentioned above are just a few of them. Trees may be planted by anyone but they serve everyone. Keep visiting this page for more interesting facts and stories elaborating the timeless relationship between Trees and Us.

Plant Trees – Do Your Bit

by Green Leap Delhi on July 26, 2011

Ever wondered why you feel a lot more relaxed (although sometimes irritated because of the confusing roads) in areas around central Delhi and especially in the vicinity of the popular monuments. Well for one they are spacious but the primary reason which always resides in our sub conscious is the vast green cover that Central Delhi Area enjoys. It is also one of the primary reasons that make the existing monuments in the city all the more appealing. Trees all around makes them look very surreal. It would be hard to imagine any of those with trees. No?
Delhi can boast of three monuments which have the status of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO and countless others that give this great city a unique charm of its own. And that is quite a feat for any city in the world.
It has been a while since Delhi Government started to push the idea of getting the entire city the same status i.e of a World Heritage Cite. But has been unable to do so for several reasons. However we as the citizens of this historically significant city can make our share of the contribution, however little it might be.
Imagine the entire city with the same look as that of Central Delhi. Wouldn’t that be wonderful. I am sure if that were to happen it would, in the least encourage people to develop a walking culture.
But the question remains how do we contribute because all the infrastructure development work lies with the municipality and the Government of the state? Well, there is one small act (which will have very large impacts), which if taken up by every individual can transform our city into one of the most beautiful in the world.

That act would be planting Trees.

This is something we can do at our own liberty with no help whatsoever. This will be our contribution to our city for our sakes.
So join us, The Department of Environment and Forest, Government of Delhi, from 23rd of July to 13th of August during this monsoon season, in planting a MILLION TREES and making Delhi one of the greenest and the most beautiful cities in the world.

Plant A Tree This Monsoon

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see Nature all ridicule and deformity, and some scarce see Nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, Nature is Imagination itself.
